Stream abroad without the buffer wheel of doom.

Exactly how much data Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify use — and which plan to pick.

Nobody wants to find out mid-episode that they've burned through their data plan. Streaming uses more data than most people expect — but with the right plan, you can watch what you want, when you want, without coming home to a horror-show phone bill. Let's do the maths.

How much data does streaming actually use?

More than most people realise — especially if kids are involved. The short answer: it adds up fast. Here are the actual numbers per hour, so you can plan properly:

  • Netflix SD (480p): ~0.7 GB/hour
  • Netflix HD (1080p): ~3 GB/hour
  • Netflix 4K: ~7 GB/hour
  • YouTube HD: ~1.5 GB/hour
  • Disney+ HD: ~2 GB/hour
  • Spotify music: ~0.15 GB/hour
  • Apple Music / Tidal: ~0.2 GB/hour

The smarter move: download before you fly

Most streaming services let you download content for offline viewing. Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video all support it. Download your series on home Wi-Fi the night before you leave and watch it on the plane, train, or beach without touching your eSIM data. Save your mobile data for real-time use — maps, messaging, the occasional scroll.

  • Netflix: tap the download icon on any compatible title.
  • Disney+: download button on most titles.
  • Spotify: download playlists for offline listening.
  • Downloaded content typically expires after 7–30 days.

When you do need to stream live

Sports, news, live events — you can't download those. For live streaming, you need consistent speed, not just raw data volume. 4G LTE handles HD streaming comfortably. 5G is even better. Check which networks your destination eSIM connects to before you buy — we list operator speeds on every destination page. Japan, South Korea, and the Netherlands have particularly fast and consistent mobile networks.

Which plan to choose for streamers

If streaming is a significant part of your trip, skip the small plans. A 10 GB plan sounds like a lot until you watch two episodes of a 4K drama. For a one-week trip with light streaming: 10 GB. For a fortnight of regular viewing: 20 GB or a daily unlimited plan. Daily plans let you stream as much as you like at full speed up to a daily allowance, then throttle to a slower speed — still fine for music and podcasts, not ideal for video.

  • Set Netflix to "Save Data" or "Standard" quality to cut usage by 50–75%.
  • Download on hotel Wi-Fi whenever possible. Use eSIM data for on-the-move moments.
  • Daily plans are the stress-free choice if you can't predict your usage: data slows down after the day's allowance instead of running out.
