Mobile data in Japan
Japan's mobile networks are world-class — expect reliable 4G and 5G coverage everywhere from Tokyo's subway stations to rural Hokkaido. Your eSIM connects through major carriers like NTT Docomo and SoftBank, so speeds are consistently fast even in crowded areas.
- Install your eSIM before you fly — it activates automatically when you land in Japan.
- Hotspot sharing works perfectly for travel companions. One eSIM can cover two devices.
- Google Maps, translation apps, and IC card top-ups all work on mobile data — essential for navigating the train system.
- Shinkansen (bullet train) has patchy coverage in tunnels, but reconnects within seconds.
- Convenience store Wi-Fi exists but is slow and requires registration. Mobile data is far more reliable.
Japan has some of the fastest mobile networks in Asia. If you plan to stream or video call, a 5 GB+ plan gives you plenty of headroom.
