Mobile data in Russia
Russia's Tele2 and Beeline networks provide strong coverage in Moscow, St Petersburg and the regional cities, with 4G along the main rail lines. Distances are vast; expect long gaps on rural roads and the Trans-Siberian between towns.
- Check current travel advice and entry rules before you go. Foreign bank cards do not work in Russia, so sort your eSIM and bookings in advance.
- Several Western social networks and sites are blocked locally. Because your eSIM data breaks out abroad, they usually work without a VPN — but do not rely on that for anything important.
- Yandex Maps and Yandex Go are the local standard for navigation and taxis and work well on data.
- Moscow metro has coverage on the platforms and in the trains.
